Variety description

The variety is autochthonous to northern Portugal, particularly the Douro Valley. It is genetically identical to the Spanish variety Godello, while differing from Verdelho, with which it was previously identified.
The period from bud burst to technical maturity is 140–145 days. Leaves are medium, rounded, three- or five-lobed. Flowers are hermaphroditic. Bunches are medium, dense, conical in shape. Berries are medium, oval, yellowish-green, prone to shade changes in direct sunlight.
The variety has low resistance to fungal diseases, in particular to powdery mildew, and therefore requires cultivation in dry and ventilated areas. Yield is estimated as high.
Used for the production of varietal wines and blends, including white port. The wines are characterized by full body, pronounced acidity, and aromas of lime, peach, and anise.
