The variety is the result of crossing Petit Bouschet and Graciano. It belongs to the mid-ripening group. Bud burst occurs late, which provides relative resistance to spring frosts, while the variety is sensitive to winter frosts and susceptible to powdery mildew.

The plant has high yield. The leaves are large, three- or five-lobed, with pubescence on the underside, turning red in autumn. The cluster is medium, conical, semi-dense to dense; the berry is medium-large, round.

Wines from this variety are distinguished by a deep color and pronounced astringency, often having a characteristic peppery note. Due to a simple flavor profile, the variety is rarely used for high-end single-varietal wines, more often acting as an additive to improve the characteristics of other wines.
