The variety was obtained by crossing the Castets and Abouriou noir varieties. Shoots have medium vigor and produce a minimal number of lateral shoots. The leaf is medium or small, pentagonal or wedge-shaped, five-lobed, with sparse bristly pubescence on the underside. The flower is hermaphroditic. Berries are black in color.

The variety is resistant to spring frosts and gray mold, but is susceptible to powdery mildew and severe winter frosts. It is a wine grape variety used primarily for the production of red wines. The wines are characterized by a deep dark color, moderate acidity, fine tannins, and aging potential.
