Variety description

The variety is an autochthon of the Piedmont region in Italy and has also been historically cultivated in France and Switzerland. The vine has medium vigor with good shoot ripening. The yield of the variety is characterized as unstable.

Morphologically, the variety is distinguished by rounded entire leaves with pubescence on the underside and cylindrical clusters of medium density. The berries are dark blue, oval, and covered with a waxy bloom. The variety is susceptible to major fungal diseases and has low winter hardiness with a critical threshold of about -18°C.

It is intended for winemaking and is rarely used in varietal wines. In blends with Neretto and Barbera varieties, it imparts notes of red berries and almond to the finished product.
