The variety is a natural hybrid of Prunelard and Magdeleine Noire des Charentes. Plants are medium-vigorous, with medium-sized, three- or five-lobed, reticulate-wrinkled leaves. Clusters are small or medium, loose or medium-dense. Berries are medium, round, dark blue in color with a thick waxy bloom and skin of medium thickness.

Malbec has low resistance to downy mildew, gray mold, and anthracnose; resistance to powdery mildew is rated as medium. The variety tolerates severe frosts and late spring frosts poorly and is prone to flower shedding, which causes yield instability. It requires training and tying to a trellis.
