The variety has ancient origins, presumably linked to the eastern Mediterranean. In Croatia, it is known as Maraština. It was traditionally used for the production of dessert wines such as Vin Santo and as a component in classic Tuscan blends to soften tannins.

The leaf is large, rounded, five-lobed, with pubescence on the underside. The cluster is very long, conical, and dense. The berry is medium-small, rounded, with a thick skin, which allows the grapes to be used for the drying process.

The variety belongs to the medium-late maturity group and is characterized by high yield. The grapes are characterized by high sugar content, aromatics, and freshness. The plant is susceptible to downy mildew, powdery mildew, as well as gray and sour rot.
