The variety is the result of a spontaneous cross and has perfectly adapted to the specific environment of volcanic ash following the eruptions of the 18th century. Agronomic practices require significant manual labor due to the need to protect vines from wind with stone walls and to work in a dry climate where volcanic soils retain the necessary moisture.

MALVASIA VOLCANICA is a low-yield wine grape variety used to produce dry, sweet, and sparkling wines. The finished product is characterized by high aromatics with notes of tropical fruits, citrus, and flowers, as well as a characteristic minerality, often described as smoky or ashy tones.

Although the variety name includes the general name of the Malvasia family, Malvasía Volcánica is a genetically independent variety. Data on resistance to specific pathogens is insufficient, but a sensitivity to grey mold common to the group is noted under high humidity conditions.
