Variety description

The variety is of Basque origin and has been known since the 18th century. Genetically, it is related to the Tannat variety, but has no connection to the Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng varieties. The variety is characterized by high vigor, mid-late ripening, and relative resistance to downy mildew. Due to low bud fertility at the base of the shoot, long pruning is recommended.

The leaf is medium, round or wedge-shaped, entire or five-lobed. Clusters are small or medium, dense, cylindrical or cylindroconical in shape. Berries are small or medium, round, dark blue, almost black in color with a thick waxy bloom. The taste of the berries is harmonious.

The variety is intended for winemaking. Wines made from it are distinguished by an intense ruby color, the presence of tannins, moderate acidity, and good aging potential. The variety is in demand for the production of wines with an alcohol content of 11–12.5%.
