The variety has French roots and was historically grown in the Bordeaux region. The flower is hermaphroditic. The leaf is rounded, five-lobed, weakly or moderately dissected, with medium density pubescence on the underside. The bunch is medium, weighing about 290 g, cylindrical-conical in shape, dense or very dense.
The berry is small, weighing about 2.1 g, rounded, dark blue in color with a thick waxy bloom. The skin is thin, the flesh is juicy, the taste is neutral. The yield of the variety is above average. The plant is characterized as susceptible to fungal diseases and frost.
The variety is known under a number of synonyms, including Tarnay, Mourtaou, and Cabernet Pfeffer. In modern winemaking, it is used in small quantities in blends.
