The variety has ancient origins and many synonyms, such as Planta Fina, Spagnol, Damaschino, and Beldi. It belongs to the group of mid-season or mid-late ripening varieties. Currently, the variety is considered autochthonous to a number of European regions, including Provence, although its planting areas have significantly decreased.

The grape is relatively resistant to drought but is susceptible to downy mildew. Morphological features include high density of pubescence on young shoots and large light-green five-lobed leaves. Shoots of the variety may have a flattened or fasciated cross-section of internodes.
