The variety is an ancient cultivar, restored in the late 20th century. DNA analysis confirmed its identity with the nearly extinct French variety Caste. The vines are adapted to cultivation at altitudes of 500–600 meters above sea level.

The plant has a late bud break period and a medium ripening period. Clusters and berries are small; berry skin is thick. The variety is characterized by high resistance to downy mildew, while showing sensitivity to grey mold.

The wine grape variety is used for creating varietal wines and blends, imparting an intense color, high acidity, minerality, and structural tannins. Wine organoleptic properties often include notes of mountain herbs and sweet pepper.
