The variety originates from Greece and is a natural color variation within the species Vitis vinifera. The name reflects the botanical features of the variety: clusters are usually dense, small or medium-sized, berries are characterized by small size and a pink shade of the skin.

The variety has a technical wine purpose. It is used to create aromatic white wines with floral, citrus, and spicy notes, including sweet and sparkling types. In France, the variety is authorized for use in wines labeled Muscat d'Alsace.
