The variety is an autochthon of the Rhône Valley region and is officially permitted for use in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Its purpose is strictly technical, for the production of blended wines.
The plant's leaf is large, heart-shaped, three-lobed, with a bullate structure and no pubescence on the underside. The bunches are cylindrical and medium-dense; the berries have an ovoid shape and a blue-black color.
The variety is characterized by late bud break and late ripening. Yields are moderate, and the variety is highly susceptible to wood diseases. Wines based on this variety have low color intensity, moderate alcohol, and are prone to oxidation.
