The variety originates from the Jerez region and the Huelva province. Genetically, it is a product of a natural cross between the Hebén variety and an unknown pollinator variety. It was widespread before the phylloxera epidemic in the 19th century, after which it was displaced by the Palomino variety, but is currently once again authorized for use in winemaking in the Jerez region.

The plant is distinguished by high yield and good drought tolerance, as well as an extremely resistant vine. It is a wine grape variety used to create complex white wines or in blends to provide structure. The wine profile may include notes of quince, tropical fruits, and citrus.
