The variety is the result of crossing the Sylvaner and Riesling varieties. It belongs to the late-ripening group and requires warm, sunny, and well-drained sites. In cold and rainy autumns, there is a risk of incomplete berry ripening. The variety is sensitive to drought and has low yield.
The plant has a specific susceptibility to Botrytis, which allows it to be used for creating Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese category dessert wines. The berries have thick skins and high natural acidity, which provides the wines with long aging potential. The aromatic profile includes notes of peach, apricot, apple, honey, and tropical fruits.
Rieslaner is a niche variety, which is cultivated primarily in the Franconia and Pfalz regions of Germany. It is known by the synonyms Mainriesling and Wuerzburg.
