The variety is a hybrid of Castets and Abouriou varieties. It has perfect flowers and a tendency to produce very small berries. The variety is characterized by high yield, however, its vigor is limited on poor soils.

Due to late bud break, the variety is resistant to spring frosts, while possessing low winter hardiness and being sensitive to severe winter frosts.

Wines from Rimava are distinguished by a deep ruby color, pronounced tannins, and aromas of wild berries, cherry, and plum. The beverages have aging potential and may resemble Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
