Variety description

The variety is autochthonous to the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is genetically related to the Touriga Franca variety or is a product of crossing the Marufo and Touriga Nacional varieties. The crop is characterized by medium vigor and forms rounded, three-lobed, medium-sized leaves.

Bunches are medium-sized, cylindrical-conical, medium-dense or loose. Berries are round or slightly oval, dark-colored, with juicy pulp. The variety matures in early to mid-season. It is prone to raisin formation under exposure to extreme heat, so it prefers cooler sites.

It possesses a fairly high yield. Resistance to fungal diseases is somewhat higher compared to other Vitis vinifera varieties, however, the variety remains sensitive to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and Botrytis. The grapes accumulate a high level of sugar, and wines made from it are characterized by intense color and fruity aromas.
