The variety is autochthonous to Spain, first mentioned in the 19th century. It is genetically independent; in terms of vine development and fruiting, it has similarities to Tempranillo, but differs in having larger berries. The variety is characterized by late ripening, requiring a long growing season until late October or early November.
Tinto Velasco is used in winemaking to create blended and single-varietal red wines. The products possess good acidity, full-bodied character, and aging potential, with notes of blackberry, black berries, and herbal and balsamic undertones dominating the aroma.
The plant is sensitive to growing conditions, which has led to a reduction in global planting areas to 50 hectares. The variety has many synonyms, including Benitillo, Blasco, Frasco, Graciano de Alfaro, and others, and is cultivated primarily in the Castile-La Mancha and La Rioja regions.
