The variety has ancient origins with versions suggesting Greek, Spanish, or Sardinian roots; it is genetically related to the Malvasia family. Synonyms for the variety include Torbato, Malvoisie du Roussillon, and Malvoisie des Pyrenees Orientales.
The clusters are large and relatively loose, and the berries are medium to large in size. The variety is considered difficult to cultivate due to unstable yields, susceptibility to powdery mildew, and a tendency for peduncles to bend, leading to berry shatter, while it is well-adapted to hot and dry soils.
Wines from this grape possess moderate aromatics with notes of apple, pear, white plum, as well as flinty, smoky, and herbal notes, while maintaining acidity at full maturity.
