Variety description

The variety is autochthonous to the Douro and Dão regions of Portugal. The vine is characterized by vigorous shoot growth with low yields. The variety is of the mid-late maturity period, has small compact bunches and small berries with thick dark blue skin covered with a dense waxy bloom.

The plant is sensitive to wind and is prone to flower abortion and millerandage. It possesses relative resistance to powdery mildew and a number of fungal diseases. The grapes are characterized by a high concentration of tannins and aromatic substances, which provides the wines with deep color, powerful structure, and intense aroma.
