The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and originates from the town of Rota, Cádiz province. It is genetically identical to the Graciano variety. The vines are sensitive to drought, but due to deep rooting in sandy soils, they demonstrated resistance to phylloxera.
The plant has a late ripening period and low yield. The clusters and berries are small, and the berry skin is very dark, almost black. The harvest is characterized by high acidity and good sugar concentration, especially during late harvesting.
The grapes are used for the production of dry and sweet red wines, including those made using the sun-drying method. The resulting wines possess an intense aroma of black fruits, cherries, and spices, as well as a pronounced structure suitable for aging.
