The variety is an autochthon of Greece. Genetically, it is the result of a natural cross between the Kontegalo and Heptakilo varieties. It is known under many synonyms, including Aetoniki, Geierklaue and Nychato Mavro, and in Messenia it is also called Elia due to the similarity of the berries to olive fruit.
The variety name means "eagle's black claw". There are also white and red varieties, which are distinguished as separate varieties. Historically, Aitonychi was often grown in home gardens as arbors, which testifies to its adaptability to such conditions.
Belongs to table grape varieties. Currently, commercial cultivation of the variety has declined due to the spread of modern seedless table varieties.
