The variety is an ancient cultivar traditionally grown in the northwestern regions of Spain and Portugal. DNA studies have confirmed its distinctness and relationship to local varieties, specifically its origin from a natural cross between Castellana Blanca and Savagnin Blanc.
The variety is characterized by compact, dense clusters and small-sized berries. The vine is notable for high yield and a certain degree of drought tolerance, however, the variety is sensitive to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and grey mold.
