The variety belongs to ancient crops of Southern Italy, likely introduced by the ancient Greeks. The vine is characterized by vigorous growth. The leaf is medium-sized, five-lobed or three-lobed, with dense pubescence on the underside. Bunches are medium-sized, elongated, cylindrical or winged, and compact. Berries are small or medium, round, bluish-black in color with a waxy bloom and thick skin.
The variety is drought-tolerant, however, it is sensitive to cold and excess moisture, which makes it susceptible to grey mold and sour rot. Yield is stable but depends on growing conditions. Wines from Aglianico are characterized by high acidity, pronounced tannins, deep color, and aromas of black berries, spices, tobacco, and chocolate.
