The variety is independent and not a clonal mutation of Aglianico, although they are genetically closely related. It has synonyms such as Aglianico Bastardo and Ruopolo. Historically, it was often confused with other varieties, including Ciliegiolo, which was corrected during genetic studies.

A wine grape variety with dark blue-black berry skins. Historically, it was considered high-yielding but producing wine of average quality, however, modern winemakers note its potential. There is interest in the variety due to its potential natural resistance to grape diseases.
