The variety features vigorous vine growth. The leaf is medium-sized, three- or five-lobed, with dense pubescence on the underside. The bunch is medium-sized, elongated, compact, and often has one to four wings. The berry is medium or small in size, round in shape, blue-black in color with thick skin and a pruinose bloom.
The variety is considered fickle; it shows resistance to powdery mildew and drought, but is sensitive to noble rot. Yields are generally low, especially when restricted to achieve high raw material quality. The grapes perform best on volcanic soils.
The purpose of the variety is the production of wines with high acidity and tannin concentration. The profile of the finished product includes notes of dark berries, spices, leather, tobacco, and mineral undertones.
