The name "Blanc De Champagne" is recorded in ampelography as a synonym for several different grape varieties. Most often, this name refers to the Chardonnay variety—a wine grape variety that is a natural hybrid of Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir. Chardonnay is characterized by a medium ripening period of about 138–140 days, the presence of a hermaphrodite flower, and low resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew.
This name may also refer to the Pinot Blanc variety, which is considered a mutation of Pinot Noir, or to the table variety Luglienga Bianca (Lignan Blanc), which is distinguished by a very early ripening period. The purpose of the fruit depends on which specific variety is hidden under this synonym in a particular context: technical winemaking or fresh consumption.
