The variety has ancient origins, presumably from Central Europe or the Balkans. It is a wine grape variety which, as a result of natural crossing, became the ancestor of more than one hundred modern grape varieties, such as Chardonnay and Riesling.
In commercial viticulture, the variety is practically not used due to the low quality characteristics of the wine, which was traditionally considered watery and acidic. Due to its displacement by more advanced descendants, it is now preserved primarily in ampelographic collections.
The variety possesses an extensive list of synonyms, numbering up to 200 names, among which the most well-known are Gouais blanc in France and Heunisch Weiss in Germany. The Portuguese names Branco Valente and Branco Gigante emphasize its high yield.
