The variety is an autochthonous cultivar of the Iberian Peninsula with a genetic relationship to the Sercial variety. The vines have medium vigor. The leaves are medium-sized and five-lobed. The clusters are medium-sized, conical, loose, with oval dark purple berries and juicy flesh.
The grape belongs to late-maturing varieties and is characterized by fairly high yields. The plant has low resistance to powdery mildew and Botrytis cinerea, while exhibiting some tolerance to downy mildew. The variety is known under a multitude of synonyms, including Alvarelhão and Brancellao.
