The variety belongs to the group of wine grape varieties and is traditionally cultivated in Portugal as part of field blends. In some cases, the name Bragão is considered a misnomer for the Barreto variety.

Detailed morphological characteristics and data on disease resistance as an independent breeding object are absent in open publications. The name is also found in the names of wineries and geographical objects.
