The variety has medium vine vigor and medium-sized five-lobed leaves. The bunches are cylindrical-conical, often with a wing. The berries are of medium size, obovate, and covered with a thick waxy skin of inky-black color.

The variety is characterized by high but unstable yields. It adapts well to various growing conditions, including coastal zones, where it shows resistance to sea winds. Like most Vitis vinifera varieties, it requires protection against fungal diseases.

The grapes have a high polyphenol content and are traditionally used in blends to provide structure and color to wines, although recently they have also been used for the production of single-varietal wines.
