The Spanish variety Bobal is characterized by vigorous vine growth and perfect flowers. The leaves are medium or large, five-lobed, with dense bristly-cobwebby pubescence on the underside. The clusters are large, dense, and conical. The berries are black or blue-violet with thick skin.
In Sardinia, the term Bovale includes two types of grapes: Bovale Sardo, which produces tannic wines with notes of spice, and Bovale Grande, which is close to the Carignan variety. These Sardinian varieties are traditionally used in blends to provide structure and deep color to wines.
