The variety is characterized by a functionally female flower type, which in some years may reduce yield in the absence of pollinators. The bunch is loose, and the berries are red with firm flesh. Synonyms encountered in documents include: Crljenica, Mesnac tvrdi, Runjevica tvrda, Surica.

Historically, the variety was used as a table grape, as well as for drying and making jams. It was rarely used in winemaking, mainly in blends. The variety is considered suitable for the production of dessert wines and for raisin production.
