The Briška glera variety is a synonym for the Glera grape, also known as Števerjana in Slovenia. Historically, the variety was named Prosecco, but after this designation was reserved for a protected geographical indication for wine, the name Glera was approved for the variety itself. Genetically, the variety is related to a number of Balkan and Central European grape varieties.
This variety is a wine grape and is used primarily for the production of sparkling wines using the Charmat method. Its wines possess high acidity and a refreshing taste with notes of stone fruit, as well as nutty and floral notes. The variety is considered aromatically neutral. Within the Glera variety, several morphological variants are distinguished, the main one being Prosecco Tondo with round berries.
