The variety is the result of a cross between Malvasia Fina and Dedo de Dama. It is one of the four "noble" varieties for the production of Madeira, which is also found in the Canary Islands under the name Gual. In modern practice, Boal Cachudo is considered the standard.
The leaves of the variety are large, five-lobed, yellow-green in color with slight pubescence on the underside. The flower is perfect. The clusters are of medium size, cylindrical-conical in shape, and have a loose structure. The berries are medium, oval, and have a golden-green hue.
Wines from this grape are distinguished by their long aging potential and a flavor-aromatic profile with notes of dried fruits, nuts, caramel, lime, and orange zest. The variety requires specific growing conditions on volcanic soils using terraced farming.
