The variety is autochthonous to Andalusia and the Canary Islands and originates from the ancient variety Hebén. It is a wine grape variety that, due to its high acidity and sugar content, is suitable for creating dry and sparkling wines, although in the past it was also used as a table grape due to its large berries.
The plant belongs to mid-late or late varieties. The leaves are of medium size, five-lobed, and almost devoid of sinuses. The bunches are loose, pyramidal in shape, and the berries are large, juicy, almost round, and pale green or pale yellow in color.
The variety possesses vigorous growth, productivity, and the ability to adapt to difficult conditions, including growth at altitudes of up to 1400 meters above sea level. Wines made from this grape are characterized by medium body, high acidity, and fresh aromas of green fruits and herbs.
The name Bujariego is used primarily on the island of La Palma. This white variety should be distinguished from the genetically distinct variety Vijariego Negro, which can sometimes appear under similar synonyms.
