The family unites varieties with different berry skin colors — from white and yellow to pink and almost black. The name originates from the Latin word muscus, which points to a specific floral aroma with notes of rose, citrus, peach, honey, and exotic fruits.
Plants of this family are primarily used in winemaking for the production of dry, semi-dry, dessert, fortified, and sparkling wines, however, there are also table varieties. Morphological traits, ripening periods, and disease resistance vary significantly depending on the specific representative of the group.
