The grape leaf is pentagonal, five-lobed, deeply cleft, with medium dense pubescence on the underside. The bunch varies from medium to large, has a conical or broadly conical shape, often with a wing, and is of medium density or dense. The berry is rather large, oval or broadly ellipsoid in shape, dark blue, almost black in color, and covered with a medium dense bloom. The skin is of medium thickness, and the flesh is juicy and fleshy.
The variety is of mid-season maturity and is characterized by moderate vigor. Short pruning is recommended. Yield is high, however, the variety is susceptible to Botrytis cinerea and prone to millerandage and coulure. It is used for the production of light red, fruity wines with low alcohol content, and also as a table variety.
The variety is independent and genetically unrelated to the Cinsaut variety, with which it is often confused. Currently, it is considered rare and is on the verge of extinction; its acreage decreased significantly in the 20th century.
