Variety description

The variety is a hybrid of Vitis riparia and Gamay noir. It is used for the production of intensely colored wines characterized by high alcohol content, extractiveness, resinous notes, and the presence of diglucoside anthocyanins.

The vines are characterized by strong growth; long pruning is recommended to obtain a yield. The bunches are small or medium, loose, cylindrical. The berries are small, dark blue or black-violet, covered with a thick waxy bloom, with highly pigmented juice.

The variety buds early and matures about one and a half weeks earlier than the Chasselas variety. It possesses tolerance to phylloxera and resistance to major fungal diseases. Winter hardiness is estimated by some sources to be up to -30 °C. Grafting is recommended; semi-covered cultivation is possible.
