The variety has ancient origins and a genetic connection to the Cypriot variety Spourtiko. The name translates from Greek as "eye" due to the shape of the berries. The variety is classified as a wine grape, but can also be used as a table grape. In winemaking, it is used in blends with the varieties Maratheftiko, Mavro, or Cabernet Sauvignon to add softness and aromatic complexity to wines.
The plant is high-yielding. In Cyprus, the variety is often grown on its own roots, as local vineyards were historically not affected by phylloxera. Wines from this variety are characterized by a ruby color, low acidity, and light body. The aroma contains notes of red fruits, berries, basil, bay leaf, and freshly cut grass; the wines are usually not intended for long aging.
