The variety is native to the islands of Hvar, Brač, and Vis. It is found under the synonyms Pavicić crni, Pavičićka loza, Plavac veliki, Bračanin, and Glavinuša bračka. There are assumptions about a possible genetic link between the variety and Soić crni.
