The variety is of spontaneous origin and is a local vine discovered in the vineyards of the province of Reggio Emilia. Genetic studies using microsatellite analysis confirmed that the variety does not belong to the Lambrusco group, but is more closely related to the local varieties Sgavetta and Rossara.

The purpose of the variety is the production of structured and harmonious red wines within the Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa DOC appellation. The designation "N." in the name indicates the black color of the berries. Despite the ampelographic assessment conducted, detailed morphological characteristics of the plant are limited in open sources.
