The Castelão variety, also known as João de Santarém, originated from a natural crossing of Cayetana Blanca and Alfrocheiro. It is an autochthonous Portuguese variety characterized by early bud burst and relatively early ripening of thick-skinned berries, which are gathered in dense, medium-sized bunches.

The plant possesses high adaptability, tolerates hot climates and poor sandy soils well, but is prone to flower abortion and millerandage. The yield of the variety can be low, especially on old vines, which contributes to an increase in the quality of the raw material.

Castelão is used exclusively as a wine grape for the production of red wines with high tannin content and aromas of wild berries. The variety has good aging potential and is often used in blends.
