The variety is autochthonous to Greece and originated from a natural cross of the varieties Roditis and Karystino. It is a wine variety that serves as the base for the production of Greek Retsina wine and is also used in blends to provide the wine with volume and balance.
The variety belongs to the late maturity group and is characterized by high yield. The plant possesses good resistance to drought, heat, powdery mildew, and downy mildew. Morphologically, it is characterized by large bunches with medium-sized berries.
Wines made from this variety have medium to high acidity, light body, and aromas of white and citrus fruits. The variety is known under many regional names, including Doumprena Aspri, Kountoura Aspri, and Sakeiko.
