The variety has a unique genetic profile and is not related to other well-known varieties. The name comes from the Italian word pugno ("fist"), which reflects the compact pyramidal shape of the clusters, resembling a clenched hand.

The plant has a medium ripening period and is characterized by naturally low yields. The leaves are medium-sized and five-lobed; the berries are round, medium-sized, with thick dark blue or black skin and an intense bloom.

The variety is used exclusively in winemaking to create varietal wines or as part of blends. Wines produced from it are distinguished by a full body, potential for long aging, and a characteristic ruby-red hue with violet tones.
