The variety forms small and loose bunches. Historically, it showed susceptibility to grey mold, which contributed to its use in the production of aszú-type sweet wines. The purpose of the variety is winemaking, primarily for creating red wines with fruity and spicy notes.
After the phylloxera outbreak, the variety virtually disappeared from widespread cultivation and is currently in the process of scientific and commercial revival. Purcsin is a rare variety and is not included in the list of main varieties authorized for use in wines with the “Tokaji” denomination.
