Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is one of the oldest in Portugal; its name translates as "cat's tail" due to the elongated shape of the clusters. Genetically, the variety originated from a natural cross between Cayetana Blanca and an unknown parent. The berries are small and yellowish-green.

The variety is classified as mid-to-late or early-to-mid maturity. It shows the best results in high-altitude, cool areas on schist or sandy soils. It has high resistance to heat and drought, but is susceptible to powdery mildew and grey mold.

It is used for the production of white wines, traditionally included in blends, including those for Port, although single-varietal wines have also been produced recently. The beverages are distinguished by freshness, citrus and floral notes, and good aging potential.
