The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and is grown almost exclusively in the Colares region. It is genetically close to the Sercial and Trincadeira Preta varieties. The variety is late-ripening and is cultivated as low-growing bushes trailing along the ground, using supports for the fruit.

A unique feature is cultivation on its own roots due to sandy soils that prevent the spread of phylloxera. The grapes are used exclusively for industrial purposes for the production of red wines with high acidity, pronounced tannins, and aging potential.
