The variety is the result of work by agronomist Rebo Rigotti, conducted in 1948 at the San Michele all'Adige Viticultural Institute. The genetic origin of the variety is confirmed as a hybrid of Merlot and Teroldego; the variety was previously known under the code name Rigotti 107-3.

Bunches are medium-sized, conical, winged, and of medium density. Berries are round, dark blue with a bloom, and have thick skin and juicy pulp. The variety shows relative resistance to fungal diseases and stable yields.

In temperate climates, it is classified as a mid-ripening variety, reaching phenolic maturity by the end of September. The wines produced are characterized by structure, medium acidity, the presence of tannins, and notes of red fruits, wild strawberries, herbs, and spices.
