The name Sommarello is used as a synonym for various genetic entities. In Apulia, it is applied to the ancient variety Uva di Troia, also known as Nero di Troia. In the Sannio area (Campania), an independent historical variety appears under this name, including the Somarello Rosso variant, which has a spontaneous origin.

These varieties are classified as wine grapes, characterized by a medium or late maturity group, and are intended for the production of red wines with a pronounced structure. These are traditional vines of folk origin that are adapted to local soil and climatic conditions and require standard agrotechnical measures.
